Most Popular Sport in America

Disclaimer: The mention of the most popular sport in America is not based on the personal choice of the writer.

What's the most popular sport in America? Is it baseball, ice hockey, basketball, or American football? Although they are the some of the most popular sports in America, only one can claim the throne. Don't you agree? I mean when you say 'the most', it's a given that you are searching for the top choice.

Various Popular Sports Played in America

Ice hockey, basketball, and football (including American football) are all team sports which are greatly admired and watched all over the country. They gain massive media coverage and generate huge amounts of revenue. However, there is one sport (I am sure you know which one I'm talking about) that literally takes the cake: American Football.

Although most of you may wish to consider baseball to be the leading sport, it however, is considered as America's national pastime. It definitely holds a huge part in the American culture, but is certainly not the most popular sport. And to add in the argument about ice hockey and basketball, both well-renowned and widespread, again, counting them as one of the most popular sports in America, doubtful.

Now that we have pretty much eliminated the other contenders, it is but obvious that the crown goes to American football; also included in the top 10 sports in the world. But don't get me wrong here. Every sport has its own set of fans who are always ready to defend its 'honor' and pledge their lives to that sport. But it will be safe for me to say that American football is the leading contender.

Most Popular Sport in America - American Football

American football is definitely not the same as soccer. If you are a diehard fan of sports and keep a thorough knowledge about sports played in the United States and around the world, then you know what the differences between the two sports are. Growing up, my father was (actually he still is) a huge fan of sports. Be it cricket, baseball, basketball, soccer, or tennis, he has to watch and keep himself updated about the latest matches, games, and news. And that is why, when he used to watch all the games, I sort of found out the first differentiation between soccer and American football: the shape of the ball. If you want to read more about these two sports, then go to the article football vs soccer for further information.

Moving on, we did find out which is the most popular sport in America, but still haven't discussed on the why part. Well, here they are:

    * The biggest reason of them all, according to Nielsen Co., was the '2010 Super Bowl XLIV between New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts that had about 106.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched program in U.S. television history.'
    * People like to gamble, place their bets on the games.
    * 32 NFL teams and 16 regular games in a 17-week span is quite entertaining. Plus the fact that your Sundays afternoons are covered; now who can beat that.
    * Another awesome reason - Monday Night Football; need I say more?
    * You get the traditional Thanksgiving Day Classic game between Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions that is a must watch.
    * Generates a lot of revenue (advertisements during Super Bowl and regular seasons).
    * The sport can be watched in person and on television. Whereas, in baseball, it's much more enjoyed if watched in person.
    * A lot of physical contact in the game; athletes getting jumped on is great to witness any day.

Now that you know what is one of the most popular sports in America, you might also be interested in reading about the most popular sports in the world. If you look at the sporting enterprise as a whole, the National Football League ranks as the most popular in the country as it attains a huge attention from everyone. If you feel that claiming American football to be the most popular sport in America could be debatable, then do leave us a comment below and bring attention to your viewpoint.

Online Gambling in Switzerland

Gambling in Switzerland has changed significantly since the 1920's when the laws prohibited most gambling and huge casino resorts were unknown. But that all changed in 2000. In April, 2000, a new law became effective that allowed casino gambling to include unlimited stakes for the first time. Controlled by a newly established federal agency, casinos can now be run with this new concession. Each casino that obtains permission to provide gambling under this law must have a social concept that provides measure to help people who may be dealing with gambling problems. Casinos have a fully-trained staff and evaluations by an independent advisory board. In 2001, the first casino concessions were granted based on each casino's application.

Casinos have very strict rules in Switzerland few years ago

This all created a new situation in Switzerland. To reduce the potential harm of gambling to the overall society, the casinos had to meet stringent requirements which are unique to those standards of the USA. After everything was in order, the casinos opened their doors for business.

Prior to casinos meeting the requirements and not that long ago, there were slot machines in some small casinos, bars and restaurants as well as in amusement arcades, but the luxury casino resorts that are so famous elsewhere were simply unavailable. During these times, you had to travel to France, Italy, Austria or Germany, crossing the borders into these countries to gamble freely.

Gambling with and without human skills

Now, with gambling on the home front, Swiss casinos can move forward. Gambling in Switzerland is broken down into two types of gaming: those games which require skill such as poker and some machine games, and those games that are based solely on chance and cannot be influenced by the player's skills, such as the average slot machine. Games of chance remain restricted to special resorts such as casinos and amusement arcades. Taxation of casinos is done on a sliding scale with the grand casinos being considered Type A and paying less taxes while smaller casinos that fall into what is considered Type B experience a higher tax rate.

Internet gambling is prohibited in Switzerland

Internet gambling and any form of gambling that involves telecommunications is strictly banned in Switzerland. With world-wide changes in the internet gaming industry, this may eventually change.

If you want to vacation in a gorgeous country and enjoy fine gambling casino resorts with unlimited stakes, you can now go to Switzerland and enjoy these fine casinos: Casino Bad Ragaz in Sankt Gallen is one example of a wonderful casino hotel. You arrive in Zurich, and drive 80 kilometers to this fine resort. Grand Casino Baden is another fine destination for a holiday. Grand Casino Basel, Casino di Locarno, Casino Lugano, Casino Luzern, Grand Casino St. Gallen and Casino St. Moritz, plus several other huge casinos scatter across the beautiful Swiss landscape. No matter what part of Switzerland you wish to visit, you'll find gaming fun readily available. You'll enjoy staying at some of the finer hotels and you will treasure your visits to the casino resorts that host a full range of services for their guest including entertainment other than gaming, fine dining and much more.

While many gamblers may not choose Switzerland as their number one casino destination yet, things could eventually move in that direction. Even though Switzerland has been one of the last thriving areas to jump on the casino revolution, they will likely stay on it for sometime. And in Switzerland, with such beautiful surroundings, you are bound to be luckier than ever before!

When Did Baseball Start

A long standing myth claimed that Abner Doubleday invented baseball. Now that this myth has been effectively thrown out, it question as to who invented baseball persists. Also when did baseball start is also wondered by many. Read on for some interesting facts about baseball.

History of Baseball

It is nearly impossible to answer the question when did baseball start or where did baseball start. Several cultures invented games which involved hitting a ball with a bat and running. But there were several rules that set each game apart. The game of baseball itself has evolved over the times and has accommodated several changes from its early versions. It is said that the game which resembles baseball the most was invented in England. Records from the early 18th century suggest that English people played a game known as 'rounder' which was very similar to the objective of baseball today. It is dissimilar from cricket, in the sense that players had to run around the bases in circles as opposed to forwards and backwards as they do in cricket. The earliest reference to the word 'baseball' in 'A Little Pretty Pocket Book' from 1745 came from England itself. While the game known as rounders continues to flourish in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, it is hard to debate the fact that baseball is more than just inspired from this old English game.

When did baseball start in the US? As the legend goes, the game we know as baseball today was invented or at least established formally, with an accepted set of rules, by Alexander Joy Cartwright. As there is little proof that baseball was played in the United States before Alexander Cartwright wrote up the rules of baseball, it has now been formally accepted that Cartwright is, if not the biological, then the adaptive father of baseball.

The legend further states that baseball, which has grown to become a hugely popular game in the United States today, was invented in a famous Manhattan based club called the Knickerbockers. So, the unofficial name for the rules as set by Alexander Cartwright goes, 'the knickerbocker rules'. The first New York based baseball team was called the New York Knickerbockers. Having created the rules, it was quite natural for him to be the umpire for the first ever baseball game played in the United States based on the Knickerbocker Rules. The game was supposedly played in Hoboken, New Jersey on 19th June, 1846 between the New York Knickerbockers and the New York Nine.

Cartwright's contribution to baseball doesn't just end at setting the rules for the game. He is also credited with popularizing the game and its rules over the United States. Cartwright, who traveled to California during the California Gold Rush, spread the knowledge of baseball pretty much at every stop on his way from New York to California.

Till about the late 1860s, baseball was largely an amateur game until a Cincinnati club - the Cincinnati Red Stockings - decided to recruit the best players for monetary compensation. The first professional baseball league in the United States was the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, formed in 1871.

And so we come to the end of this article on when did baseball start. The game we know and play as baseball today was for sure formalized in the US. About the origins of baseball, well one cannot be sure.

How to Play Baseball

Baseball is an interesting bat and ball sport. The main baseball equipment include bat, ball, gloves and protective gears. There are two teams, each of which has nine players. The umpires closely examine the sport so that each player follows the rules. One team serves as the batting team, while the other team is fielding. The batting person hits the ball thrown by the pitcher of the fielding team. Runs are then scored by touching the four corners (bases) of a ninety-foot square field (diamond). The fielding team try to stop run scoring by getting the ball as soon as possible.

How to Play Baseball

There are certain rules and regulations for playing baseball. Hence, before playing baseball, it is mandatory to understand some basic tips on how to play baseball.

Baseball Field
The four bases start in an anticlockwise fashion from the starting base (home plate) that has five sides. In addition, there are two main parts of the baseball field - infield and outfield. The former represents the ground where the four bases lie, whereas the outfield lies outside the infield, between the first and third bases. There are two foul lines, one stretching from the home plate to the first base and another from the home plate to the third base. The portion outside the line is called foul territory.

Player Position
Each player participating in a baseball sport is assigned with different positions. One player from the batting team bats at a time. He stands at the batter box in the home plate. Other players of the batting team are positioned at the three bases, they are collectively known as the base runners.

The pitcher stands in the pitcher's plate or mound (at the center of the field), while the catcher is positioned behind the batter. Four players, called infielders, stand near the bases, within the infield. Remaining three players of the fielding team who stand in the outfield are called the fielders.

Strike and Ball
When the pitcher throws the ball, the umpire checks whether the pitch was in the strike zone or not. If the thrown pitch is within the strike zone, then it is called a strike, otherwise it is called a ball. In case, there are four balls before three strikes, then it is called a walk. In such a condition, the batter gets the chance to walk to first base. On the contrary, if there are three strikes before four balls, then it is called a strikeout, in which the batter loses his batting turn.

Scoring Runs and Declaring Out
While playing baseball, there are nine innings (six for younger players). In an inning, one team bats and the remaining team pitches (defense team). The batter hits the thrown ball and scores run by touching the bases. Whereas the pitcher throws the ball in such a way that the batter misses it. It is to be noted that the batter should always hit the ball within the foul lines.

In case, the ball hit by the batter is caught in air by the defense team, then the batter is declared out. Another way to get an out is to touch the batter by the ball before he reaches the first base. If three players from the batting team are out, then the position changes, in which the defense team gets a chance to bat. The winning team is the one who scores maximum runs at the end of nine innings.

Who Invented Baseball

If it would not have been for this game, perhaps USA would have lost out on a fantastic sport. Yes, baseball it is, the national game of USA. Baseball has evolved from yesteryear's bat and ball games. French manuscripts have description of clerics playing a game something similar to baseball. Apparently, the earliest reference of baseball was done in 1774, in a British publication. However, who invented baseball, is a thing you would be dying to know, I am sure. So, here is pitching in about the invention of baseball.

Who Invented Baseball and When
Actually speaking, as mentioned earlier, baseball evolved from bat and ball games played in the olden days. Thus, it might not have been invented as such. But yes, we can say that baseball, as it is played now, was put forth for the first time by Alexander Joy Cartwright. In the year 1845, this man from New York invented or rather came up with the idea of modern baseball field. He, along with the members of New York Knickerboxer Baseball Club, came up with the rules and regulations of contemporary baseball. Cartwright is duly credited with formalizing the modern baseball rules. Therefore the answer to who invented baseball in America is Alexander Cartwright. In fact, the first ever recorded game of baseball was in 1846, where unfortunately for Cartwright, New York Knickerboxers were defeated by New York Baseball club. It was played in New Jersey. Read more on origin and history of baseball.

The Abner Doubleday Twist and Invention of Baseball
The fact that Cartwright is responsible for the current form of baseball has been endorsed by the experts and sports historians. But in between, there was a snitch. There was a special commission which concluded that baseball had been an invention of civil war hero Abner Doubleday in 1907. This piece of information was seemingly perpetuated by a panel of baseball experts who were appointed to determine how baseball originated. The conclusion that Doubleday is behind the invention was inferred upon the testimony of one Abner Graves. It was later realized that he was not a very credible source as he was found to be criminally insane. Moreover, when Doubleday died, umpteen personal letters were found, but to everyone's surprise and incredulity he had not even mentioned baseball once in all those letters. This blew and debunked the myth and rumor surrounding the fact that Abner Doubleday was the person who invented baseball. Read more on facts about baseball.

History of Baseball
It is believed that baseball was developed from a British game called rounders. It became popular around the 19th century in the USA. Then it was called 'townball', base or baseball. In the 1860's, helped by the war, New York style baseball turned into a national game and its first governing body, National Association of Baseball Players (NABBP) was established. It was astonishing, the rate at which the number of members of this organization continued to grow. By the end of 1865, the number of members of NABBP was almost close to 100. Chicago Cubs, the then Chicago White Stockings were perhaps one of the oldest team in baseball history. Then till the 1900, it was a good time for baseball. The one of the very interesting baseball facts is dead ball era. It is a typical baseball jargon, referring to a period between the 1900 to 1919, where there were low scoring games and scanty home runs. Read more on when did baseball start.

This bleak scene changed with the emergence of a star called Babe Ruth. He hit a league record 29 home runs, an amazing feat at that time (1919). Around 1940's was the period which was a golden era for Negro League Baseball as Negro League World Series was reinstated. Then was the time which was dominated by pitchers, that was during 1960s and early 1970s. Finally, after a volatile period including clashes between the owners and the players union leading to a cancellation of the World Series, the issues were sorted out in 1995. Ultimately, the 2 major leagues' administrative faculties were amalgamated under one governing body, the Major League Baseball.

Well, so that was the story of who invented baseball and interesting tit bits about baseball. I hope you found it as appealing as I did while writing! This is where I say strike 3 and go off the pitch!

Baseball Fundamentals

Baseball is the most watched game in the United States of America, and it is slowly finding its footing in many countries across the world as well. Baseball fundamentals are known to pretty much anyone who watches and follows the sport, and the game has become something of a religion for many suburban American families. It's popularity is unmatched, and it is a great choice of profession for aspiring sportsmen as well; both of which are undisputed facts about baseball.

When did baseball start? Baseball is a bat and ball game (similar to English Cricket), and was, according to some sources, developed in England in the 18th century. Baseball history documents that immigrants brought the game into the United States and shaped baseball into the modern sport that it has become. Baseball fundamentals have remained the same through the centuries, but the gameplay and the rules have changed since the time that it was first played. Without further ado, let's brush through the commonly known baseball fundamentals.

The Players
There are nine baseball players on each team in a game of baseball, with one of these players being the designated pitcher. As is common in all bat and ball games, one team bats and the other pitches or fields the ball. The pitching side has all nine players out on the field at the same time, while the batting side can have any number of players ranging from one to four, at any given moment. Baseball fundamentals also teaches us that one of the pitching team's players is the catcher, and crouches behind the batter, in order to catch a pitched ball that the batter may miss.

The Field
The game derives its name from the four bases. These are four spots that are in a square shape and this is known as the diamond in the game. The pitchers mound is at the center of the square, and the batter stands at the home plate. Going in a counter clockwise direction, you have the first base, the second base and the third base. At a 45 degrees angle on both sides of the batter are the foul lines. The area on the inside of the foul lines (where all the players are) is known as fair territory, the remaining portion is foul territory. The area that is enclosed within the bases and a few yards beyond in the fair territory is the infield, while the remaining portion is the outfield area. The fundamentals of baseball state that most of the game occurs within the infield and the outfield area (the fair territory), but some actions can occur in the foul territory as well. Learn more about baseball field dimensions and the layout of baseball diamond.

The Objective
Baseball fundamentals have defined the primary objective of the game as simply outscoring your opponents. Each team takes turns to pitch and bat, and at the end of the game the team that scores more is the winner. When both teams have batted once (that is, till all their players are out) it is known as an inning, and there are a total of nine innings per game. That means each team gets to bat a total of nine times. The pitching team tries to get all the batters out by either striking them out (strikeout), by catching a high ball before it touches the ground (flyout), by touching a base before the runner gets there (groundout), or by touching a runner with the ball or hand before he reaches a base (tagout).

Scoring
Baseball fundamentals say that a team gains one run when a batter has covered all four bases, that means he starts out at home base, and then he must reach first base, then second base, then third base and when he finally reaches home base again. Therefore, as mentioned before, at one point in time there can be four members of the batting team on the pitch, each of them covering one base. Once a batter completes a run his part in the half innings is over.

Home Run
This is a hit by the batter that crosses the entire boundary of the field without touching the ground, in effect it lands in the stands. People teaching baseball for beginners always talk about the home run as it is the best shot that a batter can hit. What it invariably means is that all the batting team members who are on the bases are allowed to reach the home plate unobstructed. Thus by hitting a home run, a batter can score 4 runs for his team in the best case scenario, but either way he will at least complete 1 run.

There are many more basic baseball rules that you should learn as well, before you start playing the game. When played in the right manner using essential baseball equipments and with the right spirit, baseball can be a very exciting and exhilarating game. These baseball fundamentals were just to get you started, the rest is simply in your hands.

Baseball Field Maintenance

The field in a national game of USA, that is baseball is sometimes a forgotten entity at lower levels and for younger teams. The fact is that, baseball field requires a bit more of maintenance than other sports. Especially when it comes to youngsters who have just started off, a well keep baseball field will prevent those unexpected whacks on the nose for them. That will make them develop positive towards the game. They would not be scared of taking strike or fielding or so. In case you are interested in knowing about baseball field maintenance, you have hit the home run!

Baseball Field Maintenance Checklist

Rake: A rake is a device used to smoothen the dirt over in the infield pre and post a game. Read more on baseball field dimensions.

Lawnmower: This is used to cut the grass and keep it at a proper height. It is mandatory as per the baseball organization.

Tampers: A device used to smoothen the artificial turf in the ground.

Fence Capping: These are mainly used when there are little league games having fences around the playing area. Any area where the fence is frayed or cut is to be covered by the fence cap.

Sprinklers: These are used to give proper moisture to the grass on the grass field, to maintain the grass.

Tarp: Tarps are tools to protect the field from getting wet and flooded on account of rain.

After we have checked what we need to maintain a baseball field, that is the baseball field maintenance equipments. Let's actually get on to how to maintain it.

How to Maintain a Baseball Field

    * The first thing you need to do is to clear off the rocks and small sticks on the whole infield. If required, add a layer of infield dirt covering the whole field. This dirt comprises sand, silt and clay allowing for traction, at the same time it is sufficiently soft for sliding.
    * Prepare a pitcher's area and mound which is durable. For preparing a pitcher's mound, you may have to consult a professional league to know about the exact specifications of the mound.
    * Have an infield totally without grass, an all dirt field. This is in case if you feel the amount of grass is going to be tough to maintain. Dragging the infield will be made easier by doing this.
    * Ensure that the area of the home plate and surrounding is built properly. Ideally, it should be built with a base of clay and there should be 2 to 3 inches of heavy infield dirt.
    * Use the hardiest grass as possible, which will suit the climate. If there are bare areas developed over an off season sod, reseed the outfield areas. When it comes to baseball field maintenance, this is a must do.
    * Create a schedule for field maintenance for every game to a volunteer committee or to the home team.
    * However, make sure that each person knows what is supposed to be done and when it is supposed to be done.
    * Ensuring a proper chain of responsibility is essential.
    * The activities which need to be done on a weekly basis are watering, mowing, maintenance of infield integrity including adding dirt as the season progresses, maintenance of the home plate area and maintenance of the pitcher's area and rebuilding it if necessary.
    * Then, there has to be a short term plan for baseball field maintenance, just before a game.
    * Dragging a field before every game, setting bases, lining base paths and raking base and home plate areas are the things which need to be done just before a match.

In case there is some doubt, offering a document defining the best practices with regards to baseball field equipment and maintenance can prove to be one of those handy baseball field maintenance tips. Read more on layout of baseball diamond.

I guess this is enough for the day, about maintaining a baseball field. I hope this was useful information I pitched in with!

Baseball Vs. Football

Hot dogs, diet coke/pepsi, LCD tv and a baseball game. Oh no, or is it a football tie which has your favorite team playing? What would you choose? American football or baseball? I am sure atleast a few of you must be having really heated debates with your friends or family members, as to which one do you prefer. It is a difficult proposition, right guys? I mean baseball is the national game, you cannot not see it or like it. American football, man that sport is something. It is popular because of its sheer power, brawn and the emotions it derives from the fans. One thing is for sure though. Both these games have a phenomenal fan following. Still, there is this Baseball vs Football divide. Pitch in therefore to get a low down on what it is all about.

Baseball vs Football Debate

How do you determine which sport is the most revered one and which has a better number of followers? Well, there are a few aspects which can throw a light on that and get you 'Home' safely!

Followers Rule
For starters, as George Carlin, a Grammy Award winning stand up comedian has said, "Baseball & football are the two most popular spectator sports in this country. And as such, it seems they ought to be able to tell us something about ourselves and our values." So, we start off with attendance and the number of spectators these sports attract. According to statistics, in the year 2000, the number of spectators at a football game was more than half of a baseball game on an average. That probably explains why National Football League (NFL) is such a huge deal in the USA. This above mentioned figure though, is based on the attendance of an entire year, divided by the total number of games played in these 2 sports. For some, this might seem like a verdict that yes, football is the winner in the tough tiff between baseball and football. But wait up, there is more! Read more on American football rules.

Rating Baseball Out?
Yes, baseball is the national game, though when it is about ratings, NFL, again wins hands down. The NFL masters have formulated the regular season matches and the schedule in a way that it has become a must watch. The reason? Well, the reason is that football happens couple or 3 days in a week, whereas baseball games are on every night. The seasons are also a cause for that. Baseball is played in spring. On the contrary football season commences in fall. This also is a reason for the huge difference in the number of spectators as well as the revenue generated. As more people watch the football matches because it is not on everyday. Obviously, the ratings a channel will get due to football is going to be much more than what it will get from baseball. Another reason for this could be the ticket rates for both the games. A football ticket is much more expensive than a baseball game. Read more on basic baseball rules.

'Role' Models
Again as per observations and studies, baseball players are not hounded much by the paparazzi in case of a controversy or any philanthropic endeavor. On the contrary, if a football player does any of such things, he is sure to get a lot of footage in the media. Then eventually it boils down to what impact these players have on the society. This is another factor in the argument entailing baseball vs football.

Intellect vs Testosterone
Well as it seems pretty evident, baseball needs strategical and intellect more, as compared to football. Football is all about 'coaches' going around in a military like conduct, compelling the players to slog. Baseball has a manager, just like soccer. In addition to this, baseball seems never ending, in comparison to football. It is thus a battle of baseball vs football strategy. Read more on history of American football.

Moolah Matters
Of all the things where baseball gets an edge is the money the players get paid. Baseball players get paid more than their American football counterparts. The difference however, is not too gaping, but it is identifiable. However, its impact on the number of people following these 2 sports is foggy.

Some other factors which add fuel to the fire of baseball vs football are venues, the awards and trophies, the gameplay, playing conditions and so on. Read more on origins and history of baseball.

Last but not the least, these sports are completely different and they cannot be compared in any way. The above were just some of the factors which may help us come to a conclusion as to which is America's favorite past time. It is at the end of the day for the spectators to decide which sport is the one they are crazy about!

This is where I hit the home run and do touch down! Enjoy the game - baseball vs football!

History of Baseball

The English game of rounders is said to be the original form of baseball. Americans however, don't accept rounders to be the predecessor of baseball. There are conflicting views on who invented the game of baseball. Similar 'bat & ball' games were played in other European countries Russia (Lapta), Germany (Schlagball) and Romania (Oina). The American version of 'rounders' played in early 1800s was known as 'Town Ball'. The 'Town Ball' was however, only one of the several names used to refer to this game; 'Round Ball', 'Stool Ball', 'Goal Ball' and 'Base' were the other names. Let us get into the details of the history of baseball through information presented below.

Baseball History

The history of baseball is shrouded by a mystery about who invented baseball. For a long time, it was believed that Abner Doubleday invented the game of baseball. Interestingly, he himself never made any such claims about inventing this game. The word baseball was first mentioned in USA in the year, 1791. It was first used in the ordinance passed by Pittsfield, Massachusetts, which banned the game from being played within 73 m distance of the town meeting house. The outskirts of today's Greenwich village (1823's New York City) was the place where baseball used to be played regularly on Saturdays. Some additional information on origin and history of baseball should be useful.

History of Baseball in America
The history of this game presented in the following paragraph reveals some of the interesting baseball facts. The game of baseball was introduced to Americans in early 1800s and flourished, until the 1860s when its popularity reduced for a short period of time. Alexander Joy Cartwright is credited with inventing the modern game of baseball. Cartwright who belonged to New York, along with his team-mates from the 'New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club', formulated the modern baseball rules that we are aware of. The first game (recorded) of baseball took place in the year 1846. It was played between the 'New York Baseball Club' and Alexander Cartwright's 'New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club'. The game was played in New Jersey at the Elysian Fields, Hoboken. As the popularity of baseball began to grow, a convention of amateur teams was called in 1857. This convention was called for discussing rules and issues related to this sport. The 'National Association of Base Ball Players' was formed in the year following the convention; it was the first organized baseball league of its kind. The delegates sent by 25 teams from the northeast formulated this league.

Influences of Civil War: Unfavorable conditions in the 1860s in the USA, resulting from Civil War, put breaks on the organization of baseball tournaments. The Union soldiers however, used baseball as a pastime activity and disseminated it to other parts of the country. As soon as the war ended, people continued with this sport and more number of leagues, than earlier, came into action. In the year 1868, the annual convention of the baseball league was attended by delegates from 100 clubs. In terms of baseball history, the American Civil War thus, proved to be of great significance.

History of Baseball Uniforms
In the year 1849, team members of the New York Knickerbockers first used a matching outfit. Blue pantaloons and white flannel shirts were some of the initial clothing and baseball equipment used by this team. Along with this dress, straw hats too were used. Cincinnati Red Stockings was the team to first replace pants by 'knickers'. In the year 1882, a rule was brought in, according to which the players, depending on their position had to wear uniforms with specific colors. The tradition of displaying patriotic symbols on the uniform started in 1917. It was during this period that America and Germany were in a state of war. The five major teams like, White Sox, The Chicago Cubs, Dodgers, Tigers and Senators resorted to wearing US flags on the uniform. Apart from the information about uniforms, some info about baseball bats history, might interest the reader.

The article presents before us, the history of baseball in short. Origin of this game and other details about clubs and the first league are presented in the paragraphs above.

How to Calculate ERA

Have you ever given a thought to why we enjoy playing and following sports? I personally think that it is because we worship excellence and dedication demonstrated by sportsmen and sportswomen in the field. Unlike life, in sports, precision matters and there is no room for error. Sportspeople must measure up to certain specified parameters of excellence. The statistical parameters of a sport provides objective parameters for comparison of performance of different baseball players. One such parameter that a pitcher in baseball is judged by is Earned Run Average (ERA) and a batter is judged by his batting average. For those of you who are new to baseball statistics calculation, I provide information about how to calculate ERA of any pitcher.

As you know, statistics matter a lot in baseball and the numbers need to be crunched out for every player as per his performance in past games. The baseball hall of fame listed players are known for their impeccable batting averages or ERAs. There is a dedicated body of statisticians who devote their time to calculation of game statistics which also provides selectors with objective parameters for selection of their future squads. You may find this statistic quoted on Baseball cards. Let me first explain what exactly is meant by an ERA and then elucidate how to calculate earned run average in baseball and softball.

What is ERA?
An ERA is a number that sums up a pitcher's performance based on his past performance. An Earned Runs Average (ERA) is a measure of how many runs a pitcher gives up over a game of nine innings on average. It is the earned runs that he would have if he pitched for nine innings straight in a game.

The method of calculating ERA is a sort of extrapolation based on the career performance of a pitcher. While the average ERA of pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB) tends to be around 4.5, the best pitchers have an ERA ranging between 2.5 and 3. You can evaluate the ERA of any pitcher on your own, with knowledge of certain parameters that include his earned runs and the total number of innings pitched by him. Let us have a look at formulas used to calculate ERA in baseball and softball.

How to Calculate ERA in Baseball?
Calculating ERA in baseball is quite simple. Just get hold of the number of total earned runs of a pitcher and the total number of innings for which he has pitched, and use the following formula for calculation of ERA.

Formula for ERA Calculation in Baseball = [(Earned Runs) x 9] / (Innings Pitched)

To put it simply just divide the earned runs by the total number of innings pitched and multiple the result by 9 to get the ERA. There is one rule that must be remembered regarding fractional number of innings pitched, which need to be rounded up with a value of 0.333 per out. If a pitcher has number of pitched innings to be 12.1 (twelve innings and one out), then convert it to 12.33. If the number of innings pitched is 12.2 (twelve innings and two out), then convert it to 12.666 before diving the earned runs with it. Remember to consider earned runs only and do not confuse it with total runs.

How to Calculate ERA in Softball?
In softball, the calculation remains almost same, with the only difference being, that you multiply by 7 instead of 9. The formula used to calculate ERA in softball is as follows:

Formula for ERA Calculation in Softball = [(Earned Runs) x 7] / Innings Pitched

All that you have to do is plug in the numbers, after rounding up the number of innings pitched and then calculate. Lower the value of ERA, better is effectiveness of pitching and more higher rated is the player. Next time, you will be better informed to understand and appreciate baseball records.

Hope these tips on how to calculate ERA were simple enough to understand. The degree of mathematics involved is elementary and the calculation can be performed in a matter of seconds. Knowing the ERA of a pitcher, you can objectively compare his performance with other pitchers. With the knowledge of ERA, choosing pitchers for your fantasy baseball will certainly be simpler.
