List of European Countries and Capitals

There are seven continents in the world. The continents are Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Europe, Oceania (Australia along with the Pacific Islands), North America and South America. In some cases Asia and Europe are termed together and called Eurasia, while North and South America are termed together as America. Irrespective of how the continents are classified, the list of countries in the world is certainly very long. Since Asia is the largest continent in the world, the list of countries in Asia is longer than the list of African countries and capitals.

The list of European countries and capitals is made up of 50 countries only, but there are several regions in Europe, which enjoy broad autonomy. Among these autonomous entities, some of them are de facto independent countries, which have limited international recognition, while some of them are unrecognized, but none of these areas are members of the United Nations. There is one country, which makes entry into the list of countries in Asia as well in the list of European countries and their capitals as well. It is Russia. Until the disintegration of Russia, the area of Russia was also known as Eurasia.

Europe is the landmass, which is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and the other water bodies in the North, Atlantic Ocean in the west, Mediterranean Sea in the South. The surface area of this continent is 10,180,000 square kilometers, which is about 2% of the Earth’s surface and about 6.8% of the total landmass on Earth. The biggest country in Europe in area as well as by population is Russia. It is the Vatican City, which is the smallest country in Europe. Although, it is second smallest continent by surface, it is third most populous continent after Asia and Africa. Now let’s take a look at the list of European capitals and countries.

From this list of European countries and capitals, it is very evident, that there are some countries, which we have not heard of. This could be because of the disintegration of different larger countries into smaller countries. With the reunification of East Germany and West Germany, they came to be known as one country. With the introduction of the European Union, a major chunk of the countries follow the same currency and traveling between these countries has become easier and one does not have to be really bothered about the visa formalities, etc., which has made the continent as good as one big country. However, the governments of each of these countries are the sovereign rulers.
