It's highly unlikely that you will comes across someone who wouldn't be fascinated about the idea of knowing which is the tallest building in the world, where it is located or how tall it actually is. While that would be a global reaction, an American would be more keen on knowing which is the tallest building in America. In the United States of America, Chicago and New York City seem to have become the favorites among construction companies when it comes tor construction of skyscrapers. As many as 8 of the 10 tallest buildings in the United States are located in these two cities. The city of Chicago though, has an edge over New York City - with three of its buildings featuring in the top 5 tallest buildings of America list. What is even more interesting is the fact that Chicago is home to the tallest building in the USA - measuring 442 meters or 1451 ft tall, as of today.

Tallest Building in US: Willis Tower

The distinction of being the current tallest building in the US goes to 'Willis Tower' - more popular as the Sears Tower, located in Chicago city of Illinois. The 108 floor skyscraper measures a whopping 442 m (1451 ft) tall. If the antenna or spire of this skyscraper is taken into consideration, its height shoots up to 527 m (or 1,730 ft.) The Willis Tower has been in limelight since it was constructed back in 1974. What is known as the tallest building in Chicago and the United States today once boasted of being the tallest building in the entire world. The building was constructed over a period of three years from 1970-1973. On its completion in 1974, the Willis Tower became the tallest building in the world - surpassing the World Trade Center (New York City) which was the world's tallest building back then by a decent margin. It continued to be the world's tallest building till 1998, when the Petronas Twin Towers (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) dislodged it for the numero uno position. Even though it is the 7th tallest building in the world as of today, Willis Tower has ruled the top spot for a record 25 years. Initially named the Sears Tower, this skyscraper was renamed the Willis Tower on 16th July, 2009.

At 442 m, the Willis Tower is undoubtedly the tallest building in the USA today. In Comparison With the Tallest Building in the World

Even though United States' tallest, the Willis Tower features at the 7th position in the list of top 10 tallest buildings of the world. At the top of this list is the Burj Khalifa - a recently completed sky scraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which is a staggering 828 m tall. Interestingly, Burj Khalifa - the tallest building in the world at 828 m (or 2,717 ft) is almost twice as tall as the Willis Tower - the tallest building in the United States. The Taipei 101 (508 m), Shanghai World Financial Center (492 m), International Commerce Center (484 m), Petronas Twin Towers (452 m), and the Nanjing Greenland Financial Center (450 m) are the other five marvels of architecture which are enlisted in the top 10 tallest skyscrapers of the world above the Willis Tower.

Lastly, there are quite a few skyscrapers lined up for completion in the next few years to come, each of which is expected to measure a whopping 2000 ft on completion.
